Ukulele Tuner Online

To tune your ukulele online, press Start tuner, allow the microphone and pluck one string. The tuner shows the note and a needle: tighten the string if it is too low, loosen it if it is too high. Standard tuning is G C E A, with the G higher than the C. Low G, baritone and D tuning are included.

Ukulele tuner

The tuner needs JavaScript and a microphone. The tables and guides below work without it.

How to use it

  1. Press Start tuner and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  2. Hold the ukulele near the microphone and pluck one string. Let it ring.
  3. Read the note and the needle: left of center is too low, right is too high.
  4. Turn the tuning peg slowly until the needle is in the green zone and the screen says In tune.
  5. Repeat for the other three strings, then check them all once more.

Standard ukulele tuning

Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are normally tuned G C E A. The G string is tuned higher than the C next to it, which is called re-entrant tuning. That is what gives the ukulele its bright, typical sound. Many people remember the four notes with the phrase "My Dog Has Fleas".

String 4 is nearest your chin when you hold the ukulele, string 1 nearest the floor. Frequencies use equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz.

How the tuner hears a note

A plucked string vibrates at one main frequency, its pitch, plus weaker overtones. The tuner takes a short slice of sound from the microphone (about a tenth of a second), and uses the YIN method, a well-known pitch detection algorithm, to find how often the waveform repeats. Several readings in a row are combined so the needle does not jump.

The result is compared with the target note and shown in cents. A cent is a hundredth of a semitone, the step between two neighbouring frets. The tuner shows "In tune" within 5 cents of the target, which is closer than most people can hear.

Your microphone and privacy

The tuner listens through your microphone only after you press Start tuner, and your browser asks you first. The sound is analysed on your device, many times per second, to find its pitch. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere. When you press Stop, switch tabs or close the page, the microphone is turned off.

If the microphone does not work, the tuner shows steps for your browser. You can also check it at testthemic.app.

Tips for a stable reading

  • Pluck firmly once and let the string ring. Do not mute it with your hand.
  • Tune in a quiet room, or hold the ukulele close to the phone or laptop.
  • Always tune up to the note: if you are too high, go below it and come back up. The string holds its tuning better.
  • Turn the peg in small steps and wait for the needle to settle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tune a ukulele with my phone?

Open this page on your phone, press Start tuner and allow the microphone. Hold the ukulele close to the phone and pluck one string at a time. The needle shows whether to tighten or loosen it. No app is needed.

What are the ukulele string notes?

In standard tuning the strings are G, C, E and A, from the string nearest your chin to the one nearest the floor. The notes are G4, C4, E4 and A4, so the G is higher than the C next to it.

Can I use this tuner for a tenor or concert ukulele?

Yes. Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same standard tuning, G C E A. Choose Low G if your G string is a thick low string, and Baritone if you have a baritone ukulele tuned D G B E.

Why does my ukulele go out of tune so fast?

New strings stretch for the first days and need tuning again and again. Changes in temperature and humidity also move the pitch. Once the strings have settled, a ukulele usually holds its tuning much better.

Is the sound from my microphone recorded?

No. The sound is analysed in your browser on your own device to find the pitch, then thrown away. Nothing is saved or sent to a server, and the microphone stops when you press Stop or leave the page.

Why does the tuner show a different note?

The tuner may hear an overtone, another string ringing, or a noise. Pluck one string, let it ring and keep the others quiet. If the note is far from every string, check that you chose the right tuning.
