Ukulele tuner questions
Is this ukulele tuner free?
Yes. The tuner, the reference tones and the chord chart are free, with no account, no app and no sign-up. There is no advertising on the site at the moment.
Does the tuner record my audio?
No. The sound from your microphone is analysed in your browser to find the pitch and then discarded. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent anywhere. The microphone turns off when you press Stop, switch tabs or close the page.
Which ukuleles can I tune here?
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles in standard G C E A or low G, baritone ukuleles in D G B E, and ukuleles in D tuning (A D F# B). Chromatic mode handles any other tuning.
Can I tune a soprano ukulele?
Yes. Soprano ukuleles are usually tuned G C E A with a high G, the standard tuning. Use the tuner on the home page or the standard tuning page. Some soprano players use D tuning instead.
Can I tune a tenor ukulele?
Yes. Tenor ukuleles use G C E A, either with a high G (standard) or a low G string. Pick the tuning that matches your G string; a thick, low-sounding G string means low G.
Can I tune a concert ukulele?
Yes. A concert ukulele is tuned the same as a soprano or tenor: G C E A. Choose Low G only if you have fitted a low G string.
Why does my phone not pick up the sound?
Make sure the browser has microphone permission, that no other app is using the microphone, and hold the ukulele close. Some phones reduce low sounds. If nothing works, test the microphone at testthemic.app.
What does In tune mean on this tuner?
It means the note is within 5 cents of the target. A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Few people can hear a difference that small, so it is close enough for playing.
Does the tuner work offline?
Once the page has loaded, the tuning itself runs on your device and does not need the internet. You do need a connection to open the page in the first place.
Why does the screen stay on?
While the tuner runs, it asks the browser to keep the screen awake, so your phone does not lock in the middle of tuning. The screen can sleep again as soon as you press Stop.
