How to read a chord diagram

  • Vertical lines are the strings: G, C, E and A from left to right, as if the ukulele faces you.
  • The thick line at the top is the nut. Horizontal lines are the frets.
  • A filled dot means press the string just behind that fret.
  • An open circle above a string means play it without pressing.
  • If a diagram starts higher up the neck, a number on the left shows the first fret.

Every shape on this page was checked against the notes of its chord: for each diagram, the four notes the strings produce were calculated and compared with the chord’s notes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the basic ukulele chords?

C, G, Am and F are the four most common beginner chords, and together they fit a great many songs. Add D, Em, Dm and G7 and you have the eight chords in the beginner chart above.

How do I print the ukulele chord chart?

Press Print or save as PDF. In the print window choose your printer, or choose Save as PDF to keep a file. Only the chord diagrams are printed, not the tuner or the rest of the page.

Do low G ukuleles use the same chords?

Yes. Low G changes only the pitch of the G string, not the finger shapes. Every chord in the G C E A chart works on a low G ukulele; the chords just sound deeper.

Why are baritone chord names different?

A baritone is tuned D G B E, a fourth below standard tuning. The same shape gives a chord a fourth lower, so the C shape is G, the F shape is C and the G shape is D.

What do the numbers under each chord mean?

They are the frets for the strings G, C, E and A, or D, G, B and E on a baritone. 0 means play the string open. For example, C is 0003: only the A string is pressed, at the 3rd fret.
