Baritone Ukulele Tuner
A baritone ukulele is tuned D G B E: D3 at 146.83 Hz, G3 at 196.00 Hz, B3 at 246.94 Hz and E4 at 329.63 Hz. These are the same notes as the four highest strings of a guitar. The baritone is the largest common ukulele. Pluck a string and follow the needle below.

Baritone notes and frequencies
| Tuning | String 4 | String 3 | String 2 | String 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baritone D G B E | D3 146.83 Hz | G3 196.00 Hz | B3 246.94 Hz | E4 329.63 Hz |
| Standard G C E A | G4 392.00 Hz | C4 261.63 Hz | E4 329.63 Hz | A4 440.00 Hz |
String 4 is nearest your chin when you hold the ukulele, string 1 nearest the floor. Frequencies use equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz.
Every baritone string is five semitones (a perfect fourth) below the matching string in standard tuning. That is why the same finger shape gives a different chord name: the shape you know as C on a standard ukulele is a G chord on a baritone.
If you already play guitar
The baritone feels familiar to guitar players, since strings 4 to 1 match the guitar’s D, G, B and high E strings. Guitar chord shapes for those four strings work directly, with the same names. See the chord chart for baritone diagrams.
Tips for tuning a baritone
- The D string is low (about 147 Hz). Small phone speakers and microphones pick it up less well; hold the phone closer.
- The two lower strings are often wound with metal and settle faster than new nylon strings.
- Check the tuning after the first few songs when strings are new.
Frequently asked questions
How is a baritone ukulele tuned?
D G B E, from the string nearest your chin: D3, G3, B3 and E4. These are the same notes as the four highest strings of a guitar. The tuning is linear, from low to high.
Is baritone ukulele tuning the same as guitar?
It matches the four highest guitar strings, D G B E. A guitar has two more strings below, E and A. So guitar chord shapes on those four strings work on a baritone and have the same names.
Can I tune a baritone ukulele to G C E A?
It is possible with special strings made for that tuning, but normal baritone strings are made for D G B E. Tuning them five semitones higher would put too much tension on the strings and the instrument.
Why does the baritone tuner struggle with the D string?
The D string is the lowest note, about 147 Hz. Some small microphones are less sensitive to low notes. Hold the microphone close, pluck firmly and let the string ring. Turning down background noise helps too.
Do baritone chords have different names?
Yes, compared with a standard ukulele. A shape that is C on a G C E A ukulele is G on a baritone, because every string is a fourth lower. The chord chart has a separate baritone section.
